Special Features of the 2002 Show

I spent my last day of the show viewing the special exhibits here at the show.  There were several interesting features for the mineral world here at the 2002 Munich show that are worth noting.   I found two German dealers working on a very interesting and worthwhile project related to dating old labels, a fabulous work of drawings by German artist Eberhard Equit , and of course the main displays relating to the theme of this year's show (Alpine Minerals) and special guest display - stunning, collaborative display of gem minerals and gold from United States Collectors Gene Meieran and Bill Larson. Summary of the 2002 Munich Show

A show of this size always provides a daunting task for someone who wants to see everything that is here.  It is just nearly impossible to cover enough ground with a quality effort to see what's new or of significance.  Some things invariably slip past my view...but not much.

The general theme of most people who attended this show is that the prices are as high as they've ever been.   There is really no difference between the show in Tucson or here.   I tend to think that some of this is due to the ascension of the Euro as the coin of the realm here. I am not entirely sure that everyone has a clear feel for pricing with this new currency.  For example what cost 100 DM last year should cost about 50 Euros this year.  I think that the psychology of getting a smaller number comes into play here a little. I would expect that this sort of phenomena would right itself over time however.

As I said elsewhere and heard endlessly from everyone there was not much new to report to the mineral world.  Regardless, this was a very satisfying show with some very interesting new finds.  I believe that the most important new find at this show was the kosnarite specimens brought by Luiz Menezes from Brazil.  They represent a quantum leap in quality for the species. other important items here are the better quality specimens of fluorite from El Hamman and Aouli Morocco, some very fine rare minerals from Canada brought here by Gunnar Farber, the Russian Fluorites from the Bikow mine, the Chinese rhodochrosite, and the new find of apatite from Kazakhstan. I also heard of a new find of helvite from Pakistan though I did not see any of these while here.  To this add the very large number of high quality specimens from previously known deposits that were visible and available everywhere here.  In terms of one rock that stands out among the rest here at the show I would have to say that the large euclase crystal in the Meieran/Larson display from Columbia is the one that took my breath away ... for a few moments at least.  It was followed closely by several of the superb alpine specimens also on display.

I would like to publicly thank show organizer John Keilmann for offering space to work here at the show and a connection to the web also which helped facilitate this report and his son Robert who helped with the nuts and bolts of the operation.  I look forward to the show in 2003.

Auf Wiedersehen und ich sieht wieder hier in München folgendes Jahr!
