The Alpine Minerals Display

The theme of the show this year was Alpine Minerals.  They pulled out the stops for this one as the display contained hundreds of world class (museum grade) specimens from this world famous region.  There were exceptional examples of minerals I had no idea even came from this region - danburite?!?!  Seeing is believing!

This is the  entrance to the special exhibits at the show this year.

The big news from the Alpine region is the new find of lithium bearing pegmatites in Italy high in the Alps!

These pictures are of single elbaite crystals and on the left is a specimen of feldspar matrix hosting smoky quartz and two fully terminated pencil crystals of elbaite.

These two photos depict both the steep and rugged area where the new find is and a matrix specimen of lepidolite on feldpsar with a photo of one of the discoverers.

The following are "just" images from the display.  There is nothing "just" about these fabulous specimens!!!

The crystal of fluorite is over 6 cm across.  The specimen on the right has fluorite crystals about 4 cm across with a rare association of bavenite.

This large  +20 cm cabinet specimen has 1.5 cm octahedral crystals scattered about it.

More fluorite eye candy!!

This crystal of scheelite is 6 cm in length (Sorry Neil - no way I could find one for you!).  The gemmy crystal of milarite on the right is 3 cm in length.

These are two pictures of the same specimen of gemmy sherry colored danburite on adularia!  The danburite crystals average about 1.5 cm in length. I want one!!!

Here are two superb specimen of sphene.  The specimen on the right is at least 10 cm across while that on the left is about 6-7 cm in height.

The display was very well laid out and just full of attractive displays.  The specimen on the left is over 1 meter across!!
That must have been "fun" to drag down the mountain!!

The following shots more or less give you sense of what the display was like.

This display are had a steady stream of visitors the whole time that it was open.   I came by several times to try and take pictures when it would be least disruptive and found that there were always people who'd just left or were just about to enter a picture.
