Historical Labels

German dealers Dr. Bernhard Sick and Dieter Goetter have been collaborating with several other folks under the business name United Minerals to prepare a reference text on historical labels. This is an important effort I believe since many times labels accompany specimens and it is not known from whence in time they came. Over the course of decades the same person or organization will change the design of their labels making it somewhat confusing to know when in time the label was prepared.   They may also employ other people to work on the labels and they may have different styles.  This work that they are finishing will allow people to cross reference their label(s) and date their label and specimen accurately.  So far they have completed the labels of Stephan, the Freiberg Museum and the Maucher family.   This effort is still in draft form but it will be printed in the near future.  Initially in German but future issues will be released in English.

The photo on the left is of the Freiberg company in the late 1800s.

This is Wilhem Maucher (maucherite) who founded the Maucher mineral shop around 1910.  His descendants continue the family business with hand written labels.

This is a sample page on the work for the Archduke Stephan Victor labels.

For more information visit Bernhard's web site.  Both Bernhard and Dieter are interested in expanding their network of people who are interested in this topic or who have information to convey to them.  They eager to make new acquaintances in this field.
