Report 1 -- Report 2 -- Report 3 -- Report 4 -- Report 5

November 6

Well the last day of the show has come and everyone is about to head to their respective part of the world.  I took the opportunity to view all of the exhibits.  I could easily have taken hundreds of photos but decided on those that I thought would best convey a sense of what was on display here.

The first set of photos were taken in Hall B3.

The next set of photos are of a display of the elements arranged in their respective place on the Periodic Table.  After looking at this display I decided to do a little experiment in my mind .....

I took some Silicon, Oxygen, Titanium and Barium (the above elements) and mixed them up and was amazed to see what came out of the test tube:  A blue triangle!

BENITOITE - BaTiSi3O9

The theme of the show this year was Masterpieces.  The Houston Museum - with curator Joel Bartsch - placed some incredible minerals on display from the collection.  Unbelievable... The following pictures are of some of the better specimens but by no means all of the best specimens - shoot: they were all great specimens! What I would term eye candy ...

One of the finest if not the finest known specimens of crystallized rose quartz from Minas Gerais Brazil.

Say hello to one of the finest proustite specimens known.
A 7 cm cluster of crystals from Chanarcillo, Chile.

This specimen has crystals of magenta cobaltoan adamite
to 6 cm from the Ojuela Mine, Mapimi, Mexico.

This is the famous Alma Queen specimen of Rhodochrosite
from the Sweethome Mine in Park County, Colorado.

I have been to the Pala Chief mine at least a dozen times and the kunzite I found there were
about 1 1/1000th the size of the 40 cm monster from the Pala Chief Mine, Pala, California.

This is a 10+ cm crystal of azurite on cuprian smithsonite from Tsumeb.
Enough said...

This rock redefines spangolite.  The crystals are up to 1 cm across!
From the Copper Queen mine, Bisbee, Arizona.  Whew!

This is a superb specimen of crystallized native
Bismuth from Schneeberg, Saxony, Germany.

I about hit the floor when I saw that this 20 cm specimen of galena was from:
Balmat, St. Lawrence, NEW YORK!

One of the killer specimens of scorodite from the famous El Cobre mine in Zacatecas, Mexico.

One of the incredible specimens recovered from the 1972 Blue Cap
pocket from the Tourmaline Queen Mine in Pala, California.

Icy blue topaz with a "forgotten" screwdriver... hmm ... A Dave Wilbur move?
Recall the sandwich he left in his agate display last year...

This will do it for me for the 2006 Munich Show.  The show exceeded my expectations and I know I did not see everything that was here.  It is way too enormous to ever hope to do that in the short five days that it "exists".  It was a great time to visit with friends and seeing people for the first time though I had communicated via email many times in the past - Hello again Nicholas S. from England!

I will start to post specimens from this show in about a week from now.  I have some travelling and jet lag to recover from and trimming and cleaning before photographing specimens and then posting them.  It will all be good and fun.

I would also like to thank the Keilmanns for their tireless work to put together this important mineral event.  Without question it is the finest mineral show in the world and the attendance and enthusiasm I saw in the dealers and attendees confirms it. This place was absolutely packed with people during the two public days.  No question that I will be back here again in 2007.

I would also like to extend my personal thanks to Uli and Karin Burchard for their hospitality and opening up their beautiful home to me for a visit during my stay in Munich.

Until November of 2007 -
