Report 1 -- Report 2 -- Report 3 -- Report 4 -- Report 5

The past two days have been busy here with many kilometers walked looking at thousands of minerals! The weather has A LOT of people talking also with very mild temperatures in the 70s and bright, sunny, blue skies! It feels more like southern California, where I was raised, than Bavaria where it is typically the land without sunshine this time of year.  I also have noted a substantial increase in the number of bicycles in use by the local populace - a result of the good weather or high fuel prices?  Hard to say.  But there are a lot of people pumping pedals in Munich these days.

As for my initial impressions, it seems that China is where most of the new things are coming from based on my observations here.  I will cover the new material that I have seen in the next two reports. Virtually nothing new from the Afghanistan/Pakistan region which may be due to the recent large earthquake and its disrupting influence.  There are, as with other recent shows, a huge number of specimens finding their way to the show from recently released collections however.

There are a substantial number of interesting items lurking about the three halls here in Munich and one has only to dig.  My best find at the show is/was a remarkable specimen of warikahnite from Tsumeb. You may recall recently that a specimen in the collection of Bill Pinch of this rare species was put on the cover of the Mineralogical Record.  Bill went on to discuss the rarity and value of this mineral in an op-ed piece in that issue so I was shocked and amazed to see a specimen available here in Munich.  I did not ask questions - only how much?  As it turns out this specimen of hydrated zinc arsenate was in my possession all of about 10 minutes before finding a new owner who was in Hall A5, but it was mine for a while...

A 1.7 cm specimen of this ridiculously rare mineral which I sold for $1250.00. Proof that there are
still many bargains in the mineral world if you are willing to look and know what you are looking at.

In Hall A4 I came upon Emanuele Marina - an up and coming Italian dealer.  I met Emanuele in Milan a few years ago through Dr. Alessandro Genezzani.  Emanuele has been a student under Federico Pezzotta (Pezzottaite) at the University in Milan and has good access to minerals from Madagascar and from his native country of Italy. He manages Demineralia.com website.  He had some vivid colored specimens of liddicoatite and several nice specimens of elbaite from Elba Island and fluorite from Italy as well as many other minerals from many other localities.

I picked up one of his richly colored specimens of liddicoatite and also one of the fluorite specimens.

Two gem specimens of liddicoatite to 2 cm in length from Madagascar.

A cabinet specimen with white tipped crystals of elbaite eon cleavlandite.

A fine specimen with pale green to colorless elbaites on quartz and feldspar.

He also had this remarkable specimen of a 1 cm schiavinatoite crystal
from Madagascar. We're talking rare here!!!

Here is Emanuele in front of his booth at the show (A4.422)..

While looking over Emanuele's material I noted a figure headed towards me so
I swung the camera around and snapped the alert looking picture of Ross Lillie.

While roaming the mineral "hunting grounds" of Hall A5 I saw Scott Werschky talking with Rainer Wilke so I figured it was an opportunity to blather a bit.  While working our jaws I noted that Rainer - owner of Wilke Mineralien (mineralien = minerals in German) - had three specimens of green powellite from Nasik, India available.  These are TOUGH to find and included with celadonite.  I bought all three to take back home.

A 4.5 cm spray of green powellite crystals on milky white apophyllite.

Rainer Wenke is in the center boxing up a specimen for Scott Werschky.

A few meters from Wilke was Superb Minerals who had the best of these
new stalactitic chalcedony and salmon colored stilbite specimens. Several
other dealers had these but the chalcedony was damaged to varying extent.
Superb had the best examples of this new find and I picked up two pieces
including this 6-7 cm specimen.

More to come in the next days from Munich!
