2015 Munich Gem & Mineral Show

The theme this year for the special displays was Gemstones and Gem Crystals.  You know what that means... lots of eye candy.   I apologize for some of the pictures which are fuzzy due to shooting without a flash in a dark display area...

The entry to the special exhibit.

A nice collection of colored diamond crystals.

Incredible 25 cm aquamarine crystal from Brazil.

A couple of other aquamarine crystals from Brazil and a 975 carat cut stone.

A football sized facetd stone of topaz and a primo imperial topaz from Pakistan.

A display of heliodors from the Urkraine and Brazil.

Emeralds from Colombia.

Faceted and specimen of morganite.

One of the finest morganite specimens I have ever had the priviledge of looking at. The faceted stones aren't bad either.

An enormous 40-50 cm crystal of kunzite from Brazil better known as the "axe".

A gem crystal on matrix from Afghanistan and a cut stone also from Afghanistan.

An etheral example of what mother nature is capable of....

Another "trinket" from the Tourmaline Queen mine in San Diego County, California.

A fine specimen from Pederneira, Minas Gerais, Brazil and faceted stone.

A specimen mined from the Tourmaline Queen mine back in the mid 1980s.

A group of pezzotaite specimens and faceted stone.

A gprgeous imperial topaz from Ouro Preto, Brazil.

A spectacular periodt (olivine) crystal from Pakistan.

A group of corundum var. ruby specimens and some cabachons.

A group of tanzanite crystals and faceted stone.

There is another large group of displays from personal collectors in the A5 Hall.  A lot of it is somewhat remedial but there are some real nuggets too. But before that here are a few pictures of some folks I saw at the show.

While in the Gem display I saw the Mineralogical Record staff Tom Moore on the left, Tom Gressman on the right and Tom G's better half Christie doing all the work in the background!

California fluorite miner and pegmatite expert Jesse Fisher.  Jesse, along with Cal Graeber, has worked the Rogerley Fuorite mine for over 15 years!

Australians Mal and Ange Southwood and yours truly hamming it up for the camera. We traveled with them for 3.5 weeks through Madagascar last year.

Ian and Diana Bruce easily had the largest display of fine minerals available for sale at the show.

On to the displays.

I saw this interesting display of minerals containing zinc.

Dr. Bernhard Sick has a specialized collection with old historic labels.  His favorite are the old labels of the Archduke Stephan.

A fine old German rhodochrosite.

Several specimens with the Stephan labels.

Several more specimens with the Stephan labels.

This was a fine case of minerals from the St. Andreasberg district in Germany.  I believe Walter Weber was behind this one.

Excellent crystals of pyrargyrite and polybasite from St. Andreasberg, Germany.

Unbelieveable dyscrasite from St. Andreasberg.

This was a fine case of silver minerals from Germany.  I believe Walter Weber was behind this one.

So this will wrap it up for me for the 2015 Munich Show.  As usual I have to thank the Keilmann family for their incredible organizational skills to bring a show like this to the hobby.  It is simply incredible how much work gets done in the 2 days to pull this off.

As I mentioned earlier there was little in the way of new material at the shows but the abundance of really high quality pieces being recycled from old collections was enough to keep all of us from the USA busy - there was a large group from the US this year - more than any year I can remember previously.  The cheaper Euro helps a lot in the regard but the other draw is the enormous quantity of good specimens here.  With some hussle you can find lots of good specimens that won't keep your kids out of college too. Mineral prices are what they are and they are continuiung to move north.  The best quality material is scopped up quickly even at 6 digit prices!  Attendance was a high as I can remember and most people were pulling cash out left and right to purchase specimens.  An interesting note here is that the vast majority of dealers and collectors only use cash for buying and selling.  Few use credit cards and checks are unknown.  It all works and the availability of ATM machines makes it easy for me to get cash at only a 1% cost.  If you ever come to Europe all you need is an ATM card.  No one takes American Express Traveler's Checks.  NO ONE!

I will be back again in 2016 and will look forward to my plate of sausages and sauerkraut with great anticipation. Until then,
