Italian Sulfur specimens

There were a surprising amount of good quality sulfur specimens available this year at the Munich Show - much more than in the previous three years! My good friend, Dr. Alessandro Genazzani, obtained some of these from the source in Sicily and has prepared a page of some of these for your perusal.  Please be sure to contact him to order these.  I vouch for him 100%.  His stuff wouldn't be here if I didn't!

All pictures and text on this page are from Dr. Alessandro Genazzani - 2001

AG-1 $85.00
Sulfur
10 x 6 x 8 cm
Cozzodisi mine, Agrigento
Sicily, Italy

Nice exposed vug filled by a dozen or so bright yellow sulfur crystals up to 1.5 cm across. The matrix is the typical aragonite found in the locality.

AG-2 $150.00
Sulfur
9 x 7 x 6 cm
Cozzodisi mine, Agrigento
Sicily, Italy

Bright yellow sulfur crystals on calcite/aragonite matrix. The largest crystals are up to 1.8 cm and found set up on the top of the specimen. On the back side an exposed vug is completely filled by a cluster of gemmy yellow sulfur crystals.

AG-4 $125.00
Sulfur
10 x 6 x 6 cm
Cozzodisi mine, Agrigento
Sicily, Italy

This exposed vug contains several perfect, lustrous, brilliant yellow, centimetric sulfur crystals. The largest is 1.5 cm in width and is damage free!  All of the other crystals are in excellent condition as well.  The color is much yellower than the pictures would suggest.

AG-5 $145.00
Sulfur on aragonite
4 x 3 x 3 cm
Cozzodisi mine, Agrigento
Sicily, Italy

Exceptional cluster of bright yellow sulfur crystals with a small amount of attacted aragonite matrix. The crystals sizes vary between 1.3-1.7 cm, very nice color and terminations! a little jewel!!

AG-6 $30.00
Sulfur
3 x 3 x 3 cm
Cozzodisi mine, Agrigento
Sicily, Italy

Small specimen with a nicely terminated 0.9 cm crystal of sulfur. The crystal shows some minor natural etching but the form is complete. There are other small crystals around, some are not complete.

AG-7 $100.00
Sulfur
4 x 2 x 3 cm
Cozzodisi mine, Agrigento
Sicily, Italy

Several sulfur crystals to 1.5 cm across are on this rock.  The color is deep yellow however there is some naturally occuring bitumen (petroleum). This can be easily removed using an organic solvent if desired.  All of the crystals are complete except for the one on the far right where the edge of the specimen is.  Overall very good luster on the surface of the crystals.

AG-8 $150.00
Sulfur
4 x 3 x 3 cm
Cozzodisi mine, Agrigento
Sicily, Italy

This is the typical shape of the sulfur from Sicily. Very nice crystals, bright yellow, and between 1-1.5 cm in size. The aragonite matrix shows small crystals and minimal traces of bitumen.

ITA105 $95.00
Sulfur
11 x 10 x 7 cm
Cozzodisi mine, Agrigento
Sicily, Italy

An other interesting sulfur specimen on aragonite. These bright, lustrous, yellow crystals are around 1-1.5 cm across. Most of them are on aragonite crystals.

AG-10 $175.00
Sulfur
8 x 7 x 6 cm
Cozzodisi mine, Agrigento
Sicily, Italy

This is a real beautiful specimen. There is a group of gemmy sulfur crystals on the top of the rock - each of them is about 1.5 cm across, but many others (I counted a dozen or so similar to those in the lower photo, on the right) are mixed among the aragonite crystals and are around 0.5 - 1 cm . The traces of natural bitumen give a real "touch of sicily"  to this rock !

AG-12 $ 65.00
Sulfur
3 x 3 x 2.5 cm
Cozzodisi mine, Agrigento
Sicily, Italy

Exceptional thumbnail sized specimen!  This is a textbook, essentially perfect, gemmy 1.2 cm crystal of sulfur crystal on aragonite matrix. The contrast on the matrix is real good, also for the traces of bitumen - again the "touch of Sicily"...

AG-22 $ 100.00
Sulfur on aragonite
6 x 5 x 3 cm
Cozzodisi mine, Agrigento
Sicily, Italy

There is a large sulfur crystal of 2.5x2.3x2.4 cm with other bright yellow ones on the white crystalline aragonite matrix.

AG-23 $ 185.00
Sulfur on aragonite
8 x 6 x 4 cm
Cozzodisi mine, Agrigento
Sicily, Italy

Bright yellow crystals on aragonite crystalline matrix.  No damage! The classical shape of the sicilian sulfur crystals are present here. The size of crystals is from 1.5-2 cm.

AG-25 $ 90.00
Sulfur
 5 x 3.3 x 3 cm
Cozzodisi mine, Agrigento
Sicily, Italy

The sulfur from Sicily is alway fashinating. These bright yellow crystals on matrix are 1 cm in size; the matrix shows some natural bitumen traces that gives a real "taste" of what the old sicilian sulfur mines were like. Such bitumen can be easily removed using an organic solvent.

AG-26 $ 50.00
Sulfur
 3 x 3 x 3 cm
Cozzodisi mine, Agrigento
Sicily, Italy

Real nice and bright perfect yellow crystals on aragonite crystalline matrix. These crystals are 0.4-0.9 cm in size and show up on white aragonite matrix that is fluorescent under UV light.
