Romanian Minerals

My eyes were opened so to speak at this show.  I have known of the high quality minerals coming out of Romania for over one year now but never did they connect with me until this show.   There were many dealers in Hall B3 that had specimens from Romania - mostly sulfide specimens and many fine specimens of quartz and calcite.   What I first noticed were the specimen of Bournonite available from Christian Rewitzer.  At first glance I took these to be Peruvian and moved on.  A label with "Baia Sprie" caught my eye and I zeroed in on these fine specimens right away. English dealer Mark Wrigley also helped in my education of Romania.  He pointed out that Scheelite from this country, though more available than in recent years since its discovery there, is still very scarce compared to such localities as China, the USA and Czech Republic.  The prices for small specimens just a couple of years ago were in the high 100's of $ for crystals just 3-4 mm in size!  They have moderated quite a bit as a more specimens have been found but are still quite a bit more expensive in contrast to much more abundant and higher quality specimens from China.  Still crystals of scheelite from Romania are generally less than 1 cm in size.  Those that exceed 1 cm are considered large for the locality.   I decided to zero in on a few that would be both interesting and not commonly seen - scheelite and gold.  I also found a very fine pseudomorph of siderite and marcasite after pyrrhotite to include in this group.  I am pleased overall with this interesting array of specimens from Romania.  I look forward to developing new pages in the future with specimens from this interesting country.

1.2 cm lustrous, doubly terminated crystal of very dark steel greyish blue scheelite rests on matrix of sphalerite and calcite.  There are also crystals of chalcopyrite on this specimen.  The blue color of the scheelite is visible when held up to a light.  I have seen specimens like this selling for over $1,000 on other websites today November 8th!!!  If you want to price compare send me an email and I will show you the website.

Perfect 0.9 cm crystal of semi transparent scheelite is perched on the side of a chalcopyrite crystal.  Calcite crystals are found at the base of the scheelite.  The bluish hue of this crystal is readily visible in the photos.
