February 8-10

This year the theme of the show is minerals from Australia.  I spent most of yesterday at the Convention Center Show visiting with people and finding some interesting specimens to add to the last update and also viewing all of the displays of minerals brought with the theme in mind as well as other just incredible pieces.  One of the many things I came away with after viewing these specimens is a greater appreciation for the incredible array and diversity of minerals found at Broken Hill, New South Wales.  Some of the specimens you will see below are just incredible. Many thanks to the people who organized the transport to Tucson to put these fabulous mineral specimens on display for us here in Tucson.

The main show video.
A quicklime video of the floor of the main show.

A 15 cm specimen of native lead from Broken Hill.

George Steacy brought these two gem crystals of rhodonite from Broken Hill. Red glass here folks.

Rob Selecki numerous specimens on display. This specimen
of stolzite has crystals to nearly 1 cm across.

How about a 4 cm crystal of gemmy microcline???

A fine copper specimen from Broken Hill on display by the Smithsonian.

This was a very fine stolzite placed on display by the Smithsonian.

Dona Leicht had one of the finest gold specimens ever on display.  I actually held this
specimen last year and took some photos of it then at the Westward Look show.  There are no
better cubic gold crystals anywhere that I am aware of.

Then there's these two crystals of inky blue, lustrous boleite. Better than any I have seen from Mexico. Also from Broken Hill.

This is a fine reticulated cerussite from Broken Hill about 15 cm across.

A 20 cm glendonite replaced by precious opal from Coober Pedy.

A 40 cm specimen of crocoite from Tasmania.  Crocoite does not get any better than the mines from Tasmania.

Several specimens in a case put in by Rob Selecki of Gold, Rhodonite and mimetite.
Good stuff!!!

A 25 cm specimen of pyromorphite from Broken Hill.

The following are some interesting non-Australian specimens presented at the show.  Special thanks to Irv Brown for pointing out some of the truly incredible material that was on display.

One of the finest jeremejevite specimens (4 cm) known from the original Namibian find near Swapkomund, Namibia.
This specimen was in the Barlow collection and I have actually held it in my hand before. The color is unlike any other
mineral I know of.

Herb Obodda had a striking display with two images of him taken at least 20 years apart.
I think the CIA and FBI could turn over some interesting "stones" in Herb's background...
No pun intended :^)

The following three images are the exceptional toenail sized specimens Herb had on display.

An enormous pegmatite specimen from Pederneira,
Minas Gerais, Brazil. It stands at least 45-50 cm in height.

New gold specimen from the Mockingbird mine in Mariposa County, California.
This and several other specimens were offered by Collector's Edge. They sold
for about $500,000 to $1,500,000 each. Yowza!!

The following 4 images are specimens from the Irv Brown Collection.  As usual Irv has shared some incredible minerals in his collection with everyone here in Tucson.  Thanks Irv!

A superb copper specimen from Michigan

An equally superb silver specimen from Michigan.

A stunning azurite from Bisbee, Arizona

A gorgeous cluster of elbaite crystals from the Himalaya mine in San Diego Co., California

There were more incredible minerals on display as the following images will demonstrate.

A color zoned spinel law twin fluorite from Mexico.
An old Walt Lidstrom specimen.

San Francisco collector Jack Halpern had a case in. I found it hard to look past the 7 cm gem tanzanite

Irv pointed out this remarkable specimen of chalcocite from Bristol though that made me look away for a while....

One of the strangest things I have ever seen anywhere.
This is a pencil of aligned garnet crystals with epitaxial apatite over the garnet.
There is some albite and acicular schorl associated with this 9 cm specimen
from Shigar, Pakistan but it is 100 % genuine and owned by Mike Bergman.
Totally wild and hard to imagine as being real unless you hold it as I did in your hand.

The last piece of business to come for the 2007 Tucson Show will be the Rocks & Minerals magazine benefit auction later in April.  I met up with Marie and Terry Huizing as well as several of the other involved people (including Jesse Fisher) to make selections for this important online auction which will be held on mineral-auctions.com.

Here's the volunteer crew busy at work cataloging the specimens.

Here are the minerals that you will see later in April.
Some very generous donations this year from the dealers.

This year the show was very well attended by more people from overseas than at any time in the past.  A strong euro/weak dollar will do that.  One interesting demographic of note is that there are more people here for the first 10 days of the show than the last week of it.  It is like there are two populations of mineral people who come to Tucson.  The first wave consists primarily of buyers and dealers looking to add to their inventory for the coming year.  The second wave of people who come tend to be the high end collectors who don't worry as much about the prices being asked for minerals or are people who really want to see the displays. Though the Convention Center show was well attended most of the buying and selling was done at the various venues around town that start up well before the Convention Center Show.  Most of the foreign visitors were long gone before the Convention Center Show was even set up. Another note to pass along is that by the time the Convention Center Show starts many of the minerals seen at that show have passed hands several times with upward pressure on prices. Your best deals by far are at the hotel venues that fire up about two weeks before the show at the Convention Center.  It really is quite interesting to see the changes in the faces that are here during an extended stay like this.

It is interesting to note the prices that common species such as fluorite and rhodochrosite are fetching, or at least being asked, are mind boggling ($10,000-$30,000 or more!).  The specimens with those price tags are top shelf specimens for sure but the person with a modest budget chasing specimens for their collection is finding it more and more difficult to fill holes in their collection due to the pricing since the high end pieces drag everything up with them.  It is a sign of the times I guess but there are still many dealers out there offering fine specimens at reasonable prices such as Steve Perry, Isaias Casanova, and Scott Werschky, John Cornish, Dudley Blauwet, Luiz Menezes to name just a few of the many.  As with anything the more you educate yourself the better you will do at venues like Tucson.

Ok. This will do it for me for the 2007 Tucson Show.  I will be back here again for another 30+ days in the middle of winter next year and will do my best to hunt down the bargains here and pass them along. Till January, 2008....

I am your fellow mineral nut,

John
