Munich Show 2014 - Report 2

As mentioned earlier the theme of the show this year was meteorites.  I am not much of an authority - actually a non-authority on meteorites but they do have and have had a profound impact on our planet. After all, the age of the reptiles came to an abrupt end after a fairly large asteroid crashed into the Earth 60 million years ago or so.  Without that event we - the only known form of intelligent life in the Milky Way Galaxy - would never have come to be. Also, you may recall that earlier this year there was a meteor that zeroed in on Chelyabinsk, Russia.  It exploded about 30 miles up and injured over 1000 people with flying glass and debris off of buildings.  No one saw that one coming so at any moment another may emerge out of the void and cause devastation.  We really do live in a shooting gallery of sorts.

The following are images from the primary display. I have also put together some displays from Hall A5 of other collectors not related to meteorites.  There were many fine displays this year.

The sign near the entrance to the Meteorite display.

An Austrian meteorite.

Several recently found European specimens.

This is a fairly recent crater from a meteoritic impact that was found using Google Earth.

A specimen from the above crater.

A recent Italian meteorite.

A stoney meteorite found near Frankfurt in 1998.

A very odd looking metallic meteorite.

A stony meteorite found in Western Australia.

A polished slab of a metallic meteorite with included crystals of peridot (Olivine).

A large metallic meteorite.

An etched metallic meteorite to display its crystalline nature.

Specimens from the recent Chelyabinsk fall.

The "big dog" found in 1751 in Austria.

Hey - check out this European T-Rex!

Here is a case with fine crystalline examples of rarer species.

I found this exceptional specimen of serandite to be the best in the case.

The sixling of cumengite was prety decent also.

Dr. Bernhard Sick had a great display of specimens from an antique collection.

Note the old timer from Colorado.

Specimens from a new find in Mongolia.

Three of the better specimens from the new find in Mongolia.

Swedish mineralogist Johan Kjellman put in a very cool display of old wooden crystal models.

Lots of drawings and wooden models.

Dig that wooden model numbered 101... Benitoite!

Austrian Thomas Weiland had some fabulous examples of copper bearing mineral

A great African dioptase.

Two copper pseudos after cuprite from Russia.

Thanks for following the show with me this year.

Cheers,   John Veevaert
