Quartz and Elbaite

Specimen of pegmatite pocket with lustrous and terminated crystals of very dark elbaite to 0.8cm.  There are also numerous semi parallel crystals of water clear quartz.  The close up picture in the upper right right reveals that the crystals are actually very dark violet colored crystals which is apparent when the crystals are adequately backlit.

Very rarely seen specimen of lilac colored tourmaline!  This crystal is 0.4 cm in length and is 2/3ds terminated.  There are also several other crystals of green colored elbaite that have etched terminations - likely damaged in the pocket then rehealed.  Crystals of quartz and microcline are also found on this specmen.

0.4 cm fully terminated crystal of beryl is found in this small vug.  Also present are small crystals of quartz in and around the vug.  This is the specimen that was found by Dr. Alessandro Genazzani while we at the mine.

Fully terminated 0.7 cm crystal of elbaite exposed in a small vug with quartz and microcline crystals.  There is another terminated elbaite immediately to the left of the crystal in the close up photo that is adjacent to a quartz crystal.  It is about 0.5 cm in length.

1.25 x 0.4 cm crystal of beryl var. Morganite on matrix consisting of quartz, feldspar and partial crystals of elbaite.  I had this specimen probed for the presence of rubidium.  It turns out that there are traces of rubidium in the feldspar which implies that this specimen likely has the exceptionally rare rubidium rich varierty of feldspar known as rubicline.   Rubicline is the only known mineral which contains the element rubidium.  What's more the pegmatites on Elba are the world's only known source for this species.
