Welcome to the
2001 Sainte-Marie aux Mines Show!
European Minerals
Silver Based SpecimensThis is an assortment of minerals all containing the element silver. During the course of the show you kind of get a sense of what might make for an interesting array of specimens to offer on the web and when I saw the new find of Kongsbergites and Proustites I decided to kind of "go for it".

Lightly rounded crystals of argentite are found mixed with crude wires of native silver and calcite matrix. Most of the silver has tarnished to a dark hue but the wire habit is readily visible in the picture in the lower right. The dendritic habit of the argentite suggests possible pseudomorphing after silver but I am not certain.

Mass of tightly intergrown wires of native silver. This specimen has rhombic molds where the original calcite crystals were etched away. There are a few partial quartz crystals embedded in the silver also. Under magnification the crystalline nature of the silver is readily evident. This is a fair sized, though not so pretty, specimen of silver from the most famous locality for it in the world.
