Radioactive Minerals

I always make it a point to visit with Gilbert Gauthier at every show that I can.  He always has some of the more interesting specimens that contain radioactive elements like Uranium.  His knowledge of the mines and minerals of the Congo is quite unsurpassed.  It is always a pleasure for me to spend some time with him as he is a living treasure house of knowledge about minerals!  There are also two French torbenrite specimens at the bottom of the page to round out this offer of "hot" rocks.  Please keep in mind that these specimens are naturally radioactive and that they shoud be handled accordingly.

Superb crystals of schoepite to 2mm are found lining the exposed vugs of this specimen.  Schoepite is commonly found as metaschoepite due to loss of water in the molecule. These are still very fresh appearing crystals with the transluscence only found with schoepite.

Numerous uranium bearing alteration minerals are found on massive uraninite.  The best examples on this specimen are of the studtite and wolsendorfite.

Crystals of uraninite - not at all common from Shinkolobwe - are found on this specimen to 0.7 cm across.  There is also very small amounts of exsolved gold found on the tops of the crystals.

Superb crystals of fourmarierite on massive uraninite with other alteration minerals: schoepite and billietite.  The crystals of fourmarierite reach to 2 mm in length.

Deep orange colored crystals of francevillite to 4 mm across with minor amounts of curienite.

Deep orange colored crystals of carnotite occur with brighter yellow partial crystals of metatyuyamunite. The green mineral is malachite.

Essentially solid, crystalline, rich deep green colored torbernite as books of crystals to 1.7 cm across.  No damage at all to this very colorful rock!  There is just a small amount of remnant calcite matrix left at the base of the specimen.
