The following are specimens from the Academy Collection.   I had the chance to look at many of the specimens in this collection during the past several weeks in Denver and in Laguna Beach.  The diversity and representation of defunct and famous localities is nothing short of stunning. What you will see here is really just the tip of the tip of the ice berg of what is available in this vast array of specimens. 

I am deeply grateful to Ian Bruce of Crystal Classics who presented me with the opportunity to view the collection and also to Wayne and Dona Leicht of Kristalle who put me up for the night in their dazzling home in Laguna Beach so that I could make this modest selection of specimens from the collection.  I am also indebted to Bryan Lees and Steve Behling of The Collector's Edge for sending 25 specimens on to Weaverville for me to include with this unique Internet offering.  You will find links to their respective websites at the bottom of the page below.

This specimen of water clear fluorite is host to several honey colored crystals of scheelite. The largest is 1.3 cm across.  The largest crystal is the only crystal with very small dings near the top as seen in the lower photo.  When was the last time you saw a scheelite like this from anywhere but China???

This specimen is one crystal face away from being a floater of the rare organic mineral whewellite.  This crystal also has inclusions of pyrite and another unknown. What is quite interesting is the elongated pyrite crystals found on and in the crystal.  Quite unusual and rare.

This specimen is a partial but mostly complete crystal of translucent cassiterite.  It is cyclically twinned as is typical of this tin oxide.  I don't know where you will find another like this anywhere!

This is the richest specimen of bromargyrite I have ever seen!  The specimen is at least 98 % bromargyrite and it weighs over 73 grams. Hence, it sure contains over 2 troy ounces of silver!!  The bromargyrite is crystalline and varies from razor sharp to somewhat round in habit.  Minor quartz association with this chunk of silver bromide!

This specimen consists of pseudomorphs of galena after pyromorphite.  The psuedos have a pleasing bluish hue and the slight iridescence.  The largest of the pseudomorphs is 1.3 cm across.

This specimen is practically covered with prismatic crystals of pyrargyrite.  The largest is just over 1/2 cm across.  The matrix of the specimen consists of sphalerite and spherical masses of pyrite.

This specimen is a sheet of native lead with a yellowish coating of hydrocerrusite.  The black mineral is pyrochroite.  There is one very large crystal that is set on a pedestal of native lead.  It is 2 cm across and has a hoppered habit. Exceptional specimen!

This specimen of quartz has an exposed veinlet with flat lying crystalline masses of the rare gold and silver telluride - sylvanite.  This specimen has been in many previous collections as there are numbers written and glues all over it.

This specimen is comprised primarily of galena and sphalerite with minor quartz.  Galena and sphalerite are both massive and crystalline on this specimen.  Also present is a a 0.5 cm cluster of the rare silver bearing sulfosalt diaphorite.  They are easily distinguished with the striated crystals.

This specimen has numerous scattered and clustered sulfide species such as sphalerite and pyrite on it.  In a couple of places are found small lath shaped crystals of lengenbachite to 3 mm in length. There is even on 1 mm crystal on the side of the gemmy caramel colored sphalerite.

This specimen has numerous scattered and clustered sulfide species such as sphalerite and pyrite on it. Near the center is a 1.1 cm crystal of jordanite.  The crystal appears to have been lightly buffed to improve its luster but the fces are all there.  Note that in the photo on the left the jordanite appears to be reddish. This is due to the reflection of my hand on the piece.  It is steel gray in color.

This specimen is nearly covered on two sides with canary yellow colored crystals of fluorite to about 1 cm across. Also set on the specimen are two crystals of lustrous galena.  They are cubic with octahedral face modifications.  The rock has not been reparied even though the crack in the center of the specimen would suggest that. It is 100% natural and again NOT repaired.

This specimen of goethite is host to sprays of flat lying crystals of legrandite.  The longest is slightly over 3 cm in length.  This specimen displays the color zoning found in a lot of legrandite with nearly snow white cores trending to deep canary yellow.  A little trimming and removal of the iron stain on this specimen would add significant value.

This specimen consists of a massive glob of germanite.  Given the age of the label this specimen had to come from some of the earliest finds of germanite made at Tsumeb.

This is an exceptional specimen of rosasite on Malachite pseudomorphing azurite.   The pseudomorphs are atypically razor sharp and the thin coating of rosasite provides a unique hue to this piece.  Small secondary azurite crystals are found scattered about the specimen and the peach colored mineral is smithsonite.  This specimen was secured during the fourth Vaux-Academy Mineral Expedition held between 1929 and 1930.

This is a specimen of rosasite on malachite pseudomorphing azurite.   The pseudomorphs in cross section clearly show the layering of the rosasite on malachite.  This specimen comes with an Art Montgomery label identifying the specimen as "paraurichalcite". This was later found to be the same as rosasite and the name was discredited.

This gossanous specimen is host to scattered crystals of colorless tarbuttite to 1.1 cm in length.  This is very large for the species.  This specimen is a trim off of one of the many brought back during the 1929-1930 Vaux-Academy Mineral Expedition to Africa.  Kabwe is the type locality for tarbuttite.

This gossanous specimen is host to a covering of dark brown tabular descloizite crystals. Upon them are  found scattred clusters of colorless tarbuttite to 1.3 cm in length.  This is very large for the species.  This specimen is one of the many brought back during the 1929-1930 Vaux-Academy Mineral Expedition to Africa. Kabwe is the type locality for tarbuttite.

This specimen of diseminated azurite rich matrix is covered on one side with olive green arthurite.  Upon that are set myriad crystals of hexagonal chalcophyllite to 0.7 cm across.  Most specimens from this locality have micro crystals.  This would rate as one of the better examples from Potrerillos.
