There are very few new things here at the show.  Every generally agrees that the world is in kind of lull for new finds.  Even so there are plenty of great specimens available here if you're willing to put in the time to find them.

For instance I found this old timer Red Cloud wulfenite in Kristalle's room at the Ramada. Orange glass!

An exceptional creedite from the Hall mine in Nye County, Nevada.  I got this one from Doug Wallace.

The evening of September 13th the Colorado School of mines hosted a reception for the mineral community.  I was able to attend it for about an hour before having to head off to another appointment.  The mineral collection on display there is one of the finest of any university in the United States.  All I had with me was my phone so I was not able to get any good photos unfortunately.

One of the things I most look forward to at shows like this are dinners with friends.  One of the best meals I had was at a place called the Brazil Cafe.  The food was outstanding and so were the friends that night - John White, Bob Cook and Mark Mauthner.

John White - aka "the Boss".

Alabama legend Bob Cook.

Mr Oceanview Mine - Mark Mauthner.

Set up day at the Merchandise Mart is always a lot of fun.  Anything that has been held back will be available during this three day show.  I helped my benitoite partner Steve Perry get his booth set up and then wandered around to see what was going to be available and also to visit with friends.

Dave Bunk with nearly empty shelves and a lot of work to do yet. That is Skip Szenics looking though flats.

The infamous Aisle J.

One of the surprises here for me at the main show was a selection of old pyrite specimens from the Barger Quarry, Rockbridge Co., Virginia. These were all in the Allen Penick Collection and were collected many years ago.  Pyrite is not usually something that I look twice at but the crystal morphology of these specimens stopped me in my tracks.  I had not seen pyrite in trisoctahedral crystals before from anywhere!  West Virgina dealer Keith Williams had a dozen or so of these and I could not resist picking up five specimens.

A 1.5 cm crystal of pyrite on silicified shale matrix.

Dan and Diana Weinrich had the anticipated opening of their new baryte specimens from the Linwood mine in Iowa.  Recall from my East Coast Show report that there were some of these made available at that show by other dealers but Dan and Diana decided to wait for the Denver Show to make their exceptional specimens from this find available.

Amber colored barytes on limestone matrix.

An exception specimen on limestone matrix of two gemmy amber crystals of baryte.

Skp Szenics again getting a better view of the Weinrich's barytes.

The only mystery during set up..

Tehachapi dealer John Seibel is always the first set up.  I found three nice Tiger specimens in his booth.

Nice to know that California is not the only place where the parking challenged reside.

My last report will cover some of the displays at the main show and have a wrap up.

A Moray eel in Richard Jackson's salt water aquarium. Richard works for Collector's Edge.
